Meet Our Veterinarians and Staff
Dr. Bob Plohr
Dr. Bob Plohr received his veterinary degree from Purdue University in 1983. He made the move to Maine later that same year. After first practicing in the Augusta area and next in Norway/South Paris, he moved to Blue Hill in 1990 to practice at Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital and Deer Isle Veterinary Clinic. His professional interests include general medicine and surgery.
Bob Lives in Penobscot with his wife Carol, son Ben, his out of control Labrador Etta and two spoiled cats Da Vinci and Fresco. When Dr. Plohr is not caring for patients you can find him fly fishing, hiking, camping, or tending to his bee hives.
Dr. Meaghan McMonagle
Dr. Meaghan McMonagle graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. After a quick year working at a walk in clinic in the heat of San Antonio she moved to Maine and joined the Blue Hill Community. She has a special interest in pain control. However, her overall goal is to use all resources available to provide the best medical care and advice for your pet and your family.
She lives with her husband Zachary, her loveable toddler and two feline friends, Dexter the Menace and Tatlier the Princess. When she is not looking after patients, Dr. McMonagle enjoys hiking, travel, sports, and baking.
Dr. Sophie Borodic
Dr. Sophie Borodic received her veterinary degree from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. After graduation, she worked at a general practice and emergency hospital in Massachusetts for four years. She then moved to Maine and joined the Lucerne Veterinary Hospital/Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital Team. Her professional interests include small animal medicine and surgery, with a special interest in emergency and critical care medicine.
She lives in Glenburn with her husband Brent, their Golden Retriever Sierra, and their rabbit Wallace.
Dr. Karen James
Dr. Karen James grew up Down East in Washington County Maine. She graduated with a DVM degree from Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. After graduation she spent four years working at a mixed animal practice in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. She is excited to be back home in Maine working with companion animals and their owners. Her professional interests include fear free practice, client education, along with wellness and preventative medicine. She strives to provide outstanding patient care with both her medicine and surgery skills.
Outside the clinic she can be found gardening, spending time with friends and family, and kayaking. She loves dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes but has a fond affinity for a Chihuahua named Vinny and an orange tabby domestic shorthair named Jasper.
Dr. Stephanie G. Monk
Dr. Monk, one of our owners, graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001 and moved to Maine the same year. Her professional interests include ultrasound and internal medicine, with a special interest in oncology. In May 2014, she also became certified in Canine Rehabilitation and feels strongly about using this to help pets improve their quality of life after injury or surgery, and as they age.
Dr. Monk lives in Ellsworth with her husband Andrew, their dogs Sprocket and Juniper, and their cat Simon. She enjoys traveling, hiking the many trails Maine has to offer, and sailing around the coastal islands with her husband and dogs.
Dr. Chris A. Miles
Dr. Miles, one of our owners, received her veterinary degree from Kansas State University in 1984 and has been practicing in this part of Maine ever since. She has also been a board certified specialist of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in canine and feline practice since 2006. Her professional interests include both general and orthopedic surgery, with a special interest in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) such as arthroscopy, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy.
She lives in Dedham with her partner Dawna, their dogs Red and Finn, their cat Elliot and a few laying hens. In her spare time, she enjoys fly fishing, hiking, golfing, and bicycling.
Trish is a Licensed Veterinary Technician and has been at Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital since 2001. She graduated from The University College of Bangor with an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology. Her professional interests include emergency medicine and client education. Her personal interests include cooking, hiking and spending time with family and friends. Trish lives with her black lab Halle and two cats, Seamus and O’Malley.
Mary C. has worked at Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital as a receptionist since 2002. She lives on the beautiful Blue Hill Peninsula with her 3 cats: Birdie the Flying Ace, Charming Billy and Bess. Birdie was a young feral cat brought in 6 years ago to be spayed and was in need a new home. Mary took her home to socialize her and she decided to stay! Billy was an Ark adoption to make company for Birdie after dear Champ (another Ark adoption) passed away at 19 years of age. Birdie is still not sure why Billy is there. Bess is a new arrival and still getting to know the other two.
Mary's veterinary background includes working at the University of Pennsylvania’s Small Animal Surgery Department as well as large animal work in British Columbia, Canada.
In her spare time Mary enjoys traveling, visiting family, gardening, bird watching and hiking.
Laurie is a veterinary assistant who has worked in the veterinary field for over 14 years. She has been with Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital and Deer Isle Veterinary Clinic since 2006. She started her professional experience in New York where she grew to love the profession. When Laurie is not at work she enjoys spending time with her two beautiful daughters, Samantha and Grace, two handsome sons, Kolbe and Gage, as well as her five cats, and a lucky dog named Bella. She especially enjoys keeping patients as happy and comfortable as possible while they are receiving treatments in our hospitals.
Tracey has worked in the animal care field since 2005. She has been with Maine Coast Vet Hospital since March 2013. She can be seen working at the reception desk or using her skills as a veterinary assistant in the treatment area. Tracey is currently working on securing her Veterinary Technician License. Rumble, her greyhound, is a certified Therapy Dog and can be seen at the library, listening to children as they read to him. In addition to Rumble, Tracey also shares her home with her husband Kagan, 2 cats, Ember and Mouse, and a pair of lizards. Her professional interests include emergency medicine and critical care.
Mary B. is a well-seasoned Licensed Veterinary Technician and has been with Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital since 2013. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology from South Shore Community College in 1984. She returned to college and received her Bachelor's Degree in Natural and Applied Science in 2000. Mary is a recent transplant from the Lewiston /Auburn area. She loves life on the peninsula and plans to stay for a very long time. Mary’s professional interests include dentistryand teaching people how to positively teach their puppies.
Mary became a Certified Professional Dog Trainer in 2013 and specializes in puppy manners and problem prevention. She holds classes for people and their puppies here at MCVH.
Mary lives with her golden retriever Keebler, a Certified Therapy Dog and Bramble her new little Parson Russell Terrier. Mary and Keebler make frequent visits to the Cortland Rehabilitation Center and also participate in the READ (Reader Education Assistance Dog) program at the Blue Hill Library.
Danielle has been part of our team for 1.5 years as a receptionist. She lives in Bucksport with her husband, two daughters, her dog “Kaya” and two cats “Ludo” and “Pooh”. Her favorite part of being here is meeting our clients and patients and making them feel comfortable and at home.
In her spare time Danielle likes to bake, and spend time with her family.
Rylee is a veterinary assistant who joined our team in May of 2015. She has always had a passion for animals and began her career in the veterinary field in 2012. She is currently attending school for veterinary technology, with the goal of obtaining her technician's license. Her professional interests include dental health, preventative care, surgical assisting, and radiology.
She currently lives on Mount Desert Island with her fur babies Mo and Mittens, two snugly cats!
Pi joined the Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital team as a veterinary assistant in April 2016. Although she is new to the veterinary field, she has worked extensively in the animal care field since 2003, and has always had a passion for helping animals and people. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family hiking, cooking, tending to their chickens, and gardening on their property. She currently lives in Sedgwick with her husband and toddler, as well as their lovely German shepherd Shadow, funny little terrier mix Herbie, and beautiful calico kitty named Stinki.
